Tesco planning a 15th store in Cambridge?

Note: NMRT has no view on other Tesco stores around Cambridge. However, this story will be of interest to some of our supporters.

We have been investigating rumours that Tesco are planning to open another Tesco Express store, this time on East Road, which would be their 15th store in the Cambridge area.

The bed shop there, Dreams, on East Road had a closing down sale at the weekend, and a shop-worker there commented that Tesco was apparently to be the new occupant.

A planning application for the site mentions the same consultants as Tesco used in the Mill Road case and who got planning permission in March for the fence used around the refrigeration plant at the Leisure Park site.

One person e-mailed us to say:

“Is there literally no limit to the number of shops they want in Cambridge?”

Tonight’s meeting

Thanks to everyone who attended tonight’s meeting.

As well as a lot of information about actions being taken with respect to the current legal situation, it was agreed that a public event will be taking place at the weekend – stay tuned for more information.

Tesco knew that lorries using the ‘loop’ would present safety issues

Below is an e-mail we obtained which contains an admission from Tesco’s own consultants that servicing their proposed store via the ‘loop’ (local streets behind the store) presents safety issues.

The relevant paragraph is:

Due to the one way nature of Sedgwick Street access to the rear of the site would be via the ‘loop’ formed by Catharine Street and Sedgwick Street. This arrangement has the potential to cause detriment to the amenity and safety of local residents, due to multiple delivery movements per day with what will still be large vehicles. There is the also potential that poorly parked vehicles on could block access, requiring long and potentially dangerous reversing manoeuvres or police action.
